Toxic habits to cut out for a healthy mind

  1. 1. Comparing Yourself with others

We all know that the act of comparison is our peace crusher. Comparing yourself to others will only make you feel hollow and destroy your mental health.

It is society, family, relatives, friends, and acquaintances who first show us this mechanism of comparison. For example, if you don’t have certain things or a certain amount of money in comparison to someone else you are not doing so well in life! Or if you do not have certain body features or shapes you do not fall in the category of beautiful!

Avoid falling into the trap of this comparison game either from you or the words of others. This toxic habit is better to be cut out for a healthy mind.

Always think that we are all humans with different talents, bodies, and capabilities. Every individual is different from others. This difference is not the benchmark to weigh someone better than the other.

2. Not believing in Yourself

Self-belief is very important to achieve anything you want in life. Doubting yourself or your capability is a sign of inculcating a toxic habit.

Your self confidence determines the love and respect you have for yourself.

Self doubt is a toxic habit that induces negative thoughts and feelings in a person. This affects your mental health.

Neglecting yourself and sacrificing your needs is a grave bad habit that needs to be removed.

Avoid getting influenced by others’ opinions in anything you want to achieve in your life.

When you have already decided to take a path having a strong belief from the very beginning is itself a game changer!

3. Getting irritated about small things

Being irritated about little things is a sign of having bare patience which I used to have a lot of.

Um… I might have this still now!

This is a toxic habit that will only make you more irritated and impatient.

The trick I try to follow for myself is that when you feel that something or any words are making you start to lose it, you stop yourself there.

Just at that second give it a thought to whether that matter is of any importance to you or will it make any impact on yourself.

Exploding or showing irritation will only make you feel bad just a moment later!

4. Being Glued to the screen

Mobile screens are a part of our daily life. But checking your phone the first thing in the morning is a grave toxic habit to cut out for your healthy mind and peace.

Struggling to stay away from the screen and messages is a common problem which is why I follow a simple rule.

Never go to sleep with your phone on. Shut it down for the nighttime while you sleep. Or better keep that phone away in another place that is out of your reach.

Staying close to your phone also hurts your work and reduces productivity.

You are constantly checking your phone every minute for new emails, notifications, and messages!

5. Overthinking every small matter

Thinking too much about a matter more than it deserves will only deplete your energy making you function improperly.

Just ask yourself whether this matter will create any significant impact on your life. For example, you are being invited to an event somewhere you do not wish to go.

You may say no but overthinking what others will think of you, for the rest of the week will only make you tired of your mind.

6. Do It Now!

Are you always dreaming of going to that park you wished for?

Or have you decided to start that side hustle this year? or decided to go for that one-mile walk in the morning?

Maybe it is a task you think for days or weeks that you really need to do, but never be able to finish it! Yes, the same goes for me!

Take that first step while deciding to do a task without thinking over it or delaying it in this overthinking process.

Just like me, you will also find yourself asking, why didn’t I do this before?

7. Splurging on unnecessary

Spending money on extra stuff that never serves any purpose other than giving momentary happiness for the first few days after they arrive in your home or close.

These stuffs are making a big hole in your pocket and bank account!

Those clothes piling up in the wardrobe that you never wore or books collecting dust whose pages never turned are asking you their actual worth in your house.

And you are not alone my friend! I too have this bad habit which I am trying to change.

Next time when some advertisement on television, billboard, or magazine cover begs you to buy certain things ask yourself twice will this stuff serves any purpose in your life.

Or you can enjoy the life you are having in the present moment!

If not then save yourself from spending your hard-earned money on not-so-necessary things

8. Thinking about what other people think

Are you the person who takes action based on what others will say or react to?

Then you are giving them the power to decide for yourself in your mind.

The person you are thinking about who will judge you may not even be giving a thought to you. No one thinks about anyone that seriously.

Always remember you are only to decide what you want or like to do. Avoid giving anyone that power in your brain.

For example, you want to wear a dress but are conscious of what people will think of you or stare at you which will make you doubt your choice of outfit.

Seriously who cares! You have made an effort to wear your dress and you are going to carry it off with style.

If anyone wants to look then give them a better view of it!

This also applies when you want to do something in your life but are hesitant about what others will think of you.

Maybe you want to work hard to start a side hustle business, but people having a job mindset may not agree with your decision.

But it is you who will finally take that call to start a business and work hard for it, not those people going to do anything on your behalf.

So avoid thinking about anyone else. Take charge of your own life as you own it.

9. Aiming For Perfection

No one is perfect that is why we are all human beings.

Perfectionism is a toxic habit that disturbs your mental health. It will always nudge you to do something extra to be even in all directions.

Many of us are not able to start or accomplish a task being of the clutches of perfectionism.

Because if you constantly want to do a task perfectly you are bound to find some loophole.

This will only delay the process of getting your task finished. In some cases, this bad habit of being perfect will only hold you to starting a job.

I am not saying that you are going to perform a task any way you wish to.

But trying to be perfect in all ways is a bit too much one can ask for. After all, we are humans with some errors.

Next time you want to wait until a task is perfect, just start it without delaying it anymore.

This will help you to accomplish a lot very easily.

10. Giving Your Painful Past Too Much Importance

Your painful past is gone for the better and fall into top toxic habits to cut out from your life.

The more you will think about that person or event which made you look miserable or ashamed the more you will be unable to move on and cut out the toxic grip of that past.

Letting go is a major self-love activity that you have the power to show yourself so that can find that mental peace.

Avoid giving your past too much value because your present is right now and is not going to be affected by it.

Quitting this toxic habit of giving importance to your painful past will only make you more present for the life and task you want to accomplish.

You will find yourself mentally productive.

11. Improper Sleeping Habits

Sleep plays a vital part in our physical and mental health.

Having disturbing sleep pattern result in insufficient rest in your body. This makes you tired and unfocused when you are awake.

Try to have a sound sleep that is a deep sleep without any interference from the phone. Checking your phone before you go to sleep like many of us or working late at night is going to take a toll on your sleeping behavior.

Insufficient sleep makes us counterproductive which is why keeping a sleep routine is beneficial to cut out this toxic habit for your health.

12. Trying To Control All

Controlling everything and thinking it will run like we want it to never happen.

You cannot control everything, and neither can I.

Life will happen on its own.

Rather than controlling all of life around you, relax and just go with the flow. Take up the task you want to start and go with it as you find your way to accomplish it.

Too much expectation out of a task and trying to mold it to get that desired result may be the cause of stress, and overwhelm that impact your mental health in the long run
